ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FORUM CONSIDERS ACTIONS TO ADDRESS THE ECONOMIC DOWNTURN

Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster has welcomed the report by the Economic Development Forum (EDF) sub-group, on further measures to help address the economic downturn.

The Minister chaired the Economic Development Forum in Belfast today, where the sub-group’s proposals were discussed.

Speaking after the meeting, the Minister said: "I established the EDF sub-group in order to bring forward, for consideration, urgent recommendations on what further steps might be taken in the immediate term, to help local businesses through the current economic downturn.

"The recommendations focus on a number of areas which could help companies at this difficult time. The proposals are wide-ranging and include greater visibility on the scheduling of infrastructure projects that will stimulate regeneration and help the local construction sector, and also targeted marketing campaigns to promote inbound tourism.

“I very much welcome the effort that has been put into developing the proposals and would express my thanks to the sub-group and, in particular, the Chair, Brian Ambrose. I will now consider the recommendations further and have already brought them to the attention of the First Minister and deputy First Minister.

Commenting on the EDF meeting, the Minister continued: “In addition to the paper outlining the proposals, there were important contributions from other members of the Forum. They will also be providing written correspondence in the coming weeks on these and other proposals.”

The Minister concluded: “I and my Executive colleagues remain committed to helping companies through this difficult period. We will be considering the proposals from EDF in that light."
